Painted in Antwerp in 1886 while Van Gogh was studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, this small canvas is something between a student exercise and a private joke — an anatomy-class skull given a lit cigarette and a faint air of existential cool. It is one of the most irreverent works Van Gogh ever produced, and one of the most unexpectedly modern. The skull laughs at death; the cigarette smokes on regardless.

The painting

Returns

Since every case is printed specifically for your order, we can only accept returns for manufacturing defects or shipping damage. Contact us within 14 days of delivery with photos and we'll arrange a replacement or refund.

  2. Galaxy: open Settings → About phone. The model name is at the top.
  3. Come back, pick the generation, then the exact model. We'll remember it for the next painting.
